What is Evista?
Evista is another name for the drug Raloxifine. It is used to treat osteoporosis (bone thinning) in post-menopausal women. It is also sometimes used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in women who are post menopausal. Generic Evista (Raloxifine) works by reducing the amount of calcium lost from bones. It helps to prevent bone loss and increase bone formation in those with osteoporosis. It can be used to treat certain types of breast cancer, and works by blocking the effects of oestrogen in the breast.
Evista should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet, an active lifestyle and weight control. Evista can sometimes be taken in conjunction with a vitamin D or calcium supplement. However, if you are already taking a calcium supplement, do not take more than is prescribed by your doctor, as it will not improve the condition of your bones any further, and may cause side effects such as kidney stones.
What are the side effects?
Generic Evista can have serious side effects such as severe lower back pain, chest pain, difficulty in breathing, sudden numbness of the body, particularly one side of the body, and unusual vaginal bleeding. You should consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects.  Some less serious side effects are hot flashes, excessive sweating, joint pain, headaches and dizziness. There may be other side effects that are not listed here, so if you have any concerns about taking Evista consult your doctor immediately.
Generic Evista should be prescribed by a doctor, and taken exactly as prescribed. If you miss a dose of Evista, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of your next dose, then skip the dose and carry on as usual. Do not take a double dose, as this may result in overdose or increased risk of side effects.
What should my doctor know?
Evista can cause blood clots, although this is rare, so if you have ever had a blood clot you should tell your doctor immediately. If you are planning surgery or need to undertake a long period of bed rest, you should stop taking Evista at least 72 hours beforehand. You should avoid long periods of inactivity, for example when travelling.
Evista is intended for women who have gone through the menopause, so if you have not yet started the menopause, or are still experiencing menopausal symptoms, tell your doctor immediately. It is unlikely that pregnant women would take this medication, but if you think you are or may be pregnant then tell your doctor. Evista can damage the unborn fetus so if you become pregnant while taking the drug then consult your doctor immediately.
Evista (Raloxifine) should be stored at room temperature in a dry dark space. All medication should be kept out of the reach of children. If you want to know more about Evista, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
