Juvederm is an injectable gel dermal filler that is used to reduce the signs of ageing. This aesthetic treatment helps to eliminate wrinkles and makes skin look more dynamic by giving it a more youthful appearance.
approved, Juvederm is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid-based (HA) filler. Many people will either use this process as an alternative to plastic surgery, or in addition to it. Juvederm supports the formation of new collagen fibers. It is injected into nasolabial folds and other lines and wrinkles, and the naturally occurring HA provides a moisturizing and plumping effect. It also helps protect against harmful free radicals.
There are many benefits to using Juvederm as a filler treatment.
In most cases, Juvederm does not require skin tests before treatment, as HA is a natural sugar. It has a unique formula and uses a manufacturing process called Hylacross, a cross-linked treatment process that is said to have either mild discomfort or no discomfort at all.
There are two types of Juvederm available: Juvederm Ultra, which is used to correct reasonably deep wrinkles and add fullness to lips, and Juvederm Ultra Plus, which is made from a denser formula and is useful for improving the look of deeper facial folds.
Along with reducing the signs of wrinkles and frown lines, Juvederm is also used to improve lid contour, improve chin contour, round out cheeks, enhance sunken areas and reduce crow’s feet.
Juvederm treatment is also used to hydrate skin and improve elasticity and tone in the face, neck, décolletage (the area between the neck and breasts) and hands.
Juvederm treatments need to be administered by a skilled practitioner. Actual treatments take up to 30 minutes and are done while patients are under a local anesthetic. For the treatment, a fine needle is used to insert the gel into the mid and deep levels of the dermis. The practitioner then massages the injected spot to smooth out the product evenly.
Results of Juvederm treatment are almost immediate and last up to a year. As hyaluronic acid is 100% biodegradable it completely breaks down quickly and leaves no sign of the filler. It has a more natural effect than plastic surgery, and has no recovery period; although, if a patient experiences some mild redness or swelling in the injection points, they may want to adjust their day accordingly.
There are minimal side effects and risks to taking Juvederm, but some tenderness, mild redness, discoloration bumps or swelling may appear around injection sites immediately after treatment. Patients having Juvederm treatment on lips may experience swelling of the lip area for a few days following treatment.
Any persistent reactions must be reported to your practitioner.
Women should not have this treatment whilst pregnant or breast-feeding, nor should individuals with a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, also called lignocaine in the UK.
