Tylenol is the North American brand name for a drug product used to relieve pain and fever.  It also combats the symptoms of allergies, cough, cold and flu.  The brand is owned by Johnson & Johnson.

How to use Tylenol

Never exceed the recommended dose of Tylenol or any of its generic counterparts.  The side effects can be serious, particularly for those in the at-risk-groups defined below.  Both the duration between doses and the dose amount should be rigidly observed. 

Tylenol is available in tablet form, but also as a liquid and a gel.  If the liquid form of Tylenol is used, then it should be administered with a specific measuring spoon to ensure the correct dosage.  The liquid should be shaken before use to ensure its consistency. 

If one is taking any other medicines, a doctor should always be consulted to avoid harmful interactions, as the active ingredient of Tylenol is also contained in other medicines.  The combination of the two may lead to exceeding the recommended dose of certain components.

Potential dangers

The use of Tylenol can result in liver failure if a person exceeds the recommended dosage.  A by-product of the metabolism of paracetamol and Tylenol is N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), a substance that can damage the liver.  Generally, this byproduct is converted into a harmless substance by an antioxidant called glutathione.  However, a large dose of paracetamol may result in the production of too much NAPQI to be neutralized by the enzyme, which would result in the destruction of liver cells.

People who are in the following categories are at increased risk of liver failure if they take too much Tylenol:

• Heavy drinkers.
• Elderly men.
• People with a pre-existing history of liver problems.
