Most Californians who need mental healthcare aren't getting it

However, a new study from the University of California, Los Angeles, suggests that most of these individuals are receiving inadequate treatment.
The new research defined "minimally adequate or better treatment" for mental health as four or more visits with a health professional over the course of one year, as well as care using any appropriate prescriptions.
"The data also shows large disparities in mental health status and treatment by demographic, economic and social factors. These findings can help direct the state's limited resources to those in greatest need of help," said researcher David Grant.
Among the report's findings is the fact that 87 percent of uninsured adults have unmet needs, compared to 77 percent of people with private insurance and 65 percent of those on public plans. This may be surprising in light of state laws requiring all insurance plans to cover mental health.
The report also found that people with mental health needs are at higher risk for developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, according to the report "Adult Mental Health Needs in California."
Demographic groups with notable rates of mental health needs include American Indians, Pacific Islanders, single parents and lesbian, gay and bisexual adults.
