Advanced MRI screening can detect osteoarthritis in its early stages

Elderly Americans may be susceptible to osteoarthritis, for which they can buy Celebrex to relieve their pain and discomfort. According to researchers from the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Radiology at New York University's Langone Medical Center, using advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques can detect subtle changes in the structure of joint cartilage.
This screening procedure could potentially identify key markers of osteoarthritis in its early stages.
Lead author Laith Jazrawi and colleagues published their findings in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. They explained that imaging technology is both sensitive and powerful enough to detect even the most subtle of alterations in the balance of water, chondrocytes, collagen fibers and protein molecules that make up joint cartilage. These factors can point to the future development of osteoarthritis.
"With an active and aging baby boomer population beginning to experience joint pain associated with age, we think there is great potential for bringing these imaging techniques from the lab to the benefit of patients," the team stated. ""The development and optimization of these innovative MR techniques has opened up a new window into the understanding and possible treatment of arthritis before irreversible structural and morphological changes has occurred."
