Many older Americans are affected by osteoporosis, and those who buy Actonel may alleviate their symptoms of pain and discomfort. Individuals who are at risk for the condition should consider increasing their dietary calcium and vitamin D, either through food or supplementation, according to researchers from the University of Illinois.
Lead author Karen Plawecki and her colleagues, who published the paper in the journal Nutrients, reported that adults who increase their calcium and vitamin D intake may develop better bone mineral density and reduce the risk of experiencing a hip fracture.
Women in particular should ensure that their diets have adequate levels of these nutrients in order to avoid bone complications in later life.
"Menopausal women should consume 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day," said Plawecki. "Three glasses of 1 percent to skim milk will get you up to 900 milligrams. The rest can easily be obtained through calcium-rich and calcium-fortified foods."
She added that drinking soy milk or orange juice and eating more yogurt, cereal, bread, breakfast bars and pancakes can help individuals get the calcium and vitamin D that they need.
