Recently, researchers from Johns Hopkins University tested another heart drug called Iosartan, which normally addresses hypertension but may also regenerate injured or damaged muscle.
The paper, which appears in the journal Science Translational Medicine, revealed that Iosartan may protect muscle tissue from wasting away due to inactivity.
Lead author Ronald Cohn, a professor of pediatrics and neurology at the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, explained that the goal of the study was to find a way to prevent disuse atrophy. The researchers examined the effects of Iosartan in a mouse model, which showed that the medicine had positive effects on muscle strength and maintenance.
"Sarcopenia is an important issue in geriatric medicine and getting more critical as increasing numbers of people age into their 70s, 80s and beyond," the researchers said. "These findings support the need for further investigation of Iosartan on muscle-related conditions in older adults."
