The ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan is sending millions of Americans to pharmacies to buy products that might protect them from the harmful effects of radiation, according to media reports. Deterred by high prices, some of them will undoubtedly consider shopping at a Canadian online pharmacy instead of a brick-and-mortar facility in the U.S.
According to a CNN report, residents of America's West Coast have been stockpiling on potassium iodide that may prevent the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine. An uptake of this compound can injure the gland and cause complications such as thyroid cancer.
Moreover, as the rush to pharmacies has continued since last weekend, some customers have been left empty-handed. In fact, several facilities in the San Francisco Bay area said they were sold out, according to the news source.
Fortunately, American customers have a recourse to Canadian online pharmacies that also offer lower prices on the sought-after supplement, as they do on most drugs and other pharmaceutical products.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals under the age of 40 are more sensitive to internal contamination with radioactive iodine, and babies, infants as well as pregnant women are in the highest-risk group.
