Prostate cancer remains a major concern for men in the U.S., and numerous treatments are being tested for the condition. Recently, a Data and Safety Monitoring Committee (DSMC) determined that a drug called atrasentan does not extend progression-free survival rates for patients with the disease, according to the results of a phase III clinical trial.
A total of 1,000 individuals who had prostate cancer underwent 36 weeks of chemotherapy. Half of the participants were given atrasentan, while the other half received a placebo. At the end of the study period, the DSMC found that the drug neither harmed nor significantly helped patients.
