This disease affects millions of Americans each year, which is why scientists continue to look for effective methods of treatment. Recently, a study from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine revealed that a genetic factor involved in obesity-induced inflammation may play a role in the development of diabetes.
Lead author Mukesh A. Jain and his colleagues said that controlling levels of the molecule, called KLF4, in immune system cells called macrophages could result in a novel treatment for obesity and associated complications, of which diabetes is one.
In the absence of KLF4, the macrophages produce toxins that kill invading bacteria, leading to inflammation. However, carrying excessive weight or eating too many high-fat foods can draw more and more inflammatory macrophages to body fat.
"A low level of inflammation over time is deleterious," the researchers explained, saying that this has been linked to diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease.
The team is now looking into whether they can change levels of KLF4 in macrophages in order to prevent inflammation and the development of disorders.
