Curcumin may help reduce inflammation associated with tendinitis

Diseases of the joints and tendons can be stressful and debilitating, which is why many osteoarthritic patients buy Celebrex to relieve their symptoms. According to a paper that will be published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, a compound called curcumin - the main component of the turmeric spice that is commonly used in Indian cooking - could be a potential treatment for tendinitis.
Lead investigator Ali Mobasheri and his colleagues from the University of Nottingham and Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, reported that curcumin could be used to suppress inflammatory processes that occur as a result of tendon diseases.
"We believe that it could offer scientists an important new lead in the treatment of these painful conditions through nutrition," Mobasheri said. "Further research into curcumin, and chemically modified versions of it, should be the subject of future investigations and complementary therapies aimed at reducing the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs."
He added that these medications are currently the only ones available to address tendinitis and some varieties of arthritis.
