According to research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, seniors who have been diagnosed with clinical depression may experience more severe symptoms of knee arthritis.
Lead investigator Tae Kyun Kim from Seoul National University said that individuals with the joint disease typically experience significant pain and impairment. Sometimes, the symptoms that they have are much more severe than what doctors can detect through X-rays, making osteoarthritis a difficult illness to treat.
Kim and his colleagues evaluated 660 men and women over the age of 65, all of whom received X-rays to determine the severity of their condition. The research team found that patients who had been diagnosed with depression reported greater pain and impaired mobility.
"The results of this study indicate that depression can play a major role in the way patients experience the symptoms of knee arthritis, and that even when X-rays show the arthritis is not severe, patients with depression may report significant pain," Kim concluded.
