Recently, a team of scientists from the Akita University School of Medicine reported that difficulty getting enough rest each night may be caused by excessive alcohol consumption.
Lead author Yohei Sagawa and colleagues explained that drinking can shorten sleep latency, suppress rapid eye movement and increase slow-wave sleep, leading to poorer quality rest.
"Alcohol affects overall sleep architecture," Sagawa stated. "Normally, during physiologic nocturnal sleep in humans, the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for 'rest-and-digest' activities, is dominant over the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for stimulating activities. We wanted to investigate how alcohol may change this complementary relationship."
The scientists concluded that, contrary to popular belief, drinking large amounts of alcohol leads to insomnia rather than a good night's sleep. They advised doctors who are treating sleep problems to consider the potential effects of this depressant.
