Over the years, advancements in research and technology have led to the development of drugs for a multitude of diseases. Recently, physicians from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine found that a particular medication designed to disrupt an intracellular pathway - which leads to lymphoma when inappropriately activated - helps kill tumor cells in the cancerous lymph nodes of dogs.
Lead authors Nicola Mason and Michael J. May published their findings in the journal Clinical Cancer Research. They revealed that the drug, called NEMO Binding Domain, led to the cell death of malignant lymphocytes. The scientists believe that this remedy may also be applicable in humans.
"This is the first indication that the specific inhibition of this pathway may have a beneficial effect in human and canine patients with this disease," the researchers concluded.
