A recent report that appears in the current issue of the journal Archives of Dermatology found that physician-based screening for melanoma is associated with higher rates of detection. Identifying the illness at an early stage has been shown to be crucial to ensuring a favorable prognosis.
"Working on the premise that physician-based screening and patient self-screening are vital in the detection of early melanoma, we compared melanoma characteristics in patients new to our practice vs. established patients in the pigmented lesions clinic at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center," the scientists said.
They concluded that it is vital to have a combined strategy of physician detection and patient participation in order to ensure an early diagnosis of melanoma.
