Recently, a paper published in the European Heart Journal revealed that individuals who experience intense distress or a fear of dying from a heart attack could undergo harmful biological changes, such as inflammation. In turn, these processes may have a negative effect on patient outcomes.
Researchers evaluated a total of 208 patients who had been admitted to St. George's Hospital in London between 2007 and 2008. These individuals were diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome, in which a heart attack or unstable angina results in blockage of the coronary arteries.
Lead author Andrew Steptoe reported that fear of dying is common among patients who experience a heart attack. This can lead to large inflammatory responses that can potentially damage the heart.
"We would recommend that doctors talk to patients more about their emotional experience when having a heart attack, rather than just concentrating on the physical outcomes," Steptoe said. "The two are closely linked, and better information and reassurance could be of great benefit."
