Gene linked to schizophrenia, other diseases not enough to cause mental illness

Patients who are struggling with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder may help themselves live a more functional life if they buy Canadian Zyprexa. These diseases, along with depression, have been associated with mutations in the gene DISC1. However, new research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reveals that a single mutation in this gene, by itself, is not enough to lead to mental illness.
The study team sequenced the genes of 750 test subjects. About half of these subjects were considered healthy, while the rest had either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. The results revealed several possible mutations in the DISC1 gene.
However, within the population, none of these mutations was significantly more common than in the healthy ones.
Based on previous research, the scientists focused on four of the most common mutations. Three of them were involved in the Wnt pathway, a mechanism that promotes healthy maturation of nerve cells, as published in the journal Neuron. The fourth mutation was linked to the improper location and circuit formation of nerve cells.
"The brain is really a remarkable organ. It's just so plastic and has this enormous capacity to compensate for any kinds of defects," said researcher Li-Huei Tsai.
Further studies are needed to see how mutations in other genes can lead to mental illness.
