Inflammation in prosthetic joints may be caused by titanium debris

In severe cases of this condition, joints such as the knee or hip may need replacement with titanium prosthetics. Some patients find that such treatments may make them more prone to inflammation or bone destruction. New research suggests that these complications may be due to titanium debris.
Prior research indicated that side effects from joint replacement may be due to bacteria latching onto titanium particles. However, new research from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey shows that it may be the metal particles themselves that are responsible for activating the immune system.
The study team conducted an experiment on laboratory mice and discovered that titanium debris can elicit a reaction known as the Th2 response, in which alternatively activated macrophages (AAMs) from the immune system drive inflammation. This research supports other evidence that AAMs may lead to bone destruction for patients who have prosthetics or some forms of arthritis, as published in the Journal of Immunology.
In 2006, doctors performed more than 780,000 total joint replacements in the U.S., according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Arthritis was the most common cause.
