Lipitor, other statins can help both men and women
While a prescription to buy Canadian Lipitor can help heart patients lower their cholesterol, the medical community was not entirely sure whether women can reap the same benefits that men can.
While a prescription to buy Canadian Lipitor can help heart patients lower their cholesterol, the medical community was not entirely sure whether women can reap the same benefits that men can. New research from Massachusetts General Hospital suggests that statin therapy is effective for all patients regardless of gender, as reported in HealthDay.
Statins can improve an individual's cardiovascular risk profile by reducing levels of bad cholesterol and helping to raise amounts of good cholesterol. Past studies suggested that women benefited from the drugs less than men.
In order to investigate this idea, a team of scientists conducted a review of 18 clinical trials, which included more than 140,000 patients, of whom more than 40,000 were female.
Results showed that the risk of a heart attack was reduced by about 20 percent for both men and women, as published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
"Statin therapy should be used to treat all appropriate patients, regardless of gender," said lead researcher William Kostis, as quoted by HealthDay.
Independent experts suggest that potential side effects from statins, such as muscle pain and a risk of diabetes, should still be taken into consideration for women, the news source said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 16 percent of adults in the U.S. have high total cholesterol.
