Looking at parasites' resources can help scientists identify drug targets

Recently, University of Melbourne researchers revealed that a better understanding of the way in which parasites like Leishmania use nutrients to grow could help unveil drug targets against them.
Lead author Malcolm McConville created an analytical method that assessed what metabolic pathways are essential to the survival and development of the parasite. The information gets so specific as to narrow down the atoms that the pathogen relies on for food.
"This is a very significant breakthrough in this field because the more we know about these dangerous pathogens and how they live, the better we can fight them with new, effective drugs," McConville said.
He added that having a greater understanding of Leishmania can help researchers develop specific medications that impart fewer side effects.
