Malnutrition remains a risk three months after a stroke

Researchers from Sweden also discovered that three months after a stroke, a significant number of survivors remain at risk for malnutrition.
For the study, the team of scientists monitored the health of 36 stroke survivors, measuring health functions such as swallowing and alertness at five days and three months after the event.
The proportions of patients who had problems with sitting and manipulating food on the plate or in the mouth went down over time. However, the number of subjects who had trouble eating adequate amounts of food went up. This may be because the rates of difficulties with swallowing or eating speed remained steady.
Other results showed that at five days, 78 percent of patients were at risk for malnutrition. Three months later, this figure was still high at 56 percent.
"These findings suggest a clear need for healthcare professionals to assess the eating problems faced by stroke patients when they have returned to the community to avoid them becoming malnourished," said researcher Jorgen Medin.
The study was published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing.
