According to a study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, many of the five million Americans who have this condition may be putting themselves at risk by skipping pills for fear of expense. However, doing so could increase their chances of hospitalization or even death.
Cardiologist Shannon Dunlay and her colleagues recruited 209 heart failure patients from Olmsted County, Minnesota, all of whom were between the ages of 60 and 86.
After tracking the subjects' pharmacy records, the researchers discovered that younger individuals were more likely to skip their medications than those who were older. Additionally, men were much less likely than women to stick to certain drug regimens.
Financial concern was cited as the main reason why many participants did a poor job of adhering to their medicine. Almost 77 percent of individuals in the study were eligible for Medicare, but 46 percent reported that they still had trouble paying for drugs and had stopped taking statins due to cost.
The researchers emphasized that patients who are worried about being able to afford drugs should speak to their physicians. There are many low-cost alternatives available, especially if individuals opt to buy cheap medication from Canada.
