The illness is among the most expensive to treat, and a recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that young people who have it often face substantially higher medical costs than their healthy peers.
Most of this expense can be attributed to the high cost of prescription drugs, according to researchers. Whether patients have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, having to purchase medications and receive outpatient care can considerably lighten their wallets.
"Young people with diabetes face medical costs that are six times higher than their peers without diabetes," said Ann Albright, director of the CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation. "Most youth with diabetes need insulin to survive, and the medical costs for young people on insulin were almost 65 percent higher than for those who do not require insulin to treat their diabetes."
Among young Americans who have the illness, approximately 92 percent receive an insulin treatment, compared to only 26 percent of diabetic adults.
