According to a study from the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, such illnesses represent one of the largest public health challenges in Europe in the 21st century. Researchers also reported that these conditions are largely untreated, either due to the fact that patients are unaware of their disorder or do not seek medical advice.
The scientists conducted a three-year study among 30 countries, including Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, comprising 514 people with major mental and neurological disorders. The team examined patients between the ages of 2 and 65, spanning the full spectrum of illnesses for each age group.
The results showed that about 38.2 percent of the European population is diagnosed with a mental disorder each year, a figure that equates to 164.8 million individuals. The conditions are common regardless of age.
The most frequent illnesses include anxiety disorders, insomnia, major depression, somatoform disorders, chemical dependence and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
According to the researchers, mental disorders account for as much as 26.6 percent of Europe's total disease burden.
