Over the years, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has increased among Americans, prompting many patients to buy Actos in order to manage their condition. Recently, two Merck research scientists were honored at a ceremony held by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) for their leadership in the development of Januvia, a once-daily pill for type 2 diabetics.
Nancy A. Thornberry and Ann E. Weber received the Discoverers Award for their leadership on the project. The drug, in conjunction with a nutritious diet and plenty of exercise, is designed to help patients control their blood glucose levels.
Januvia has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and works to inhibit an enzyme called DPP-4, which promotes the pancreatic release of insulin. The treatment is being prescribed to millions of individuals who have type 2 diabetes today.
"Because of the work of Ann and Nancy and their team, many diabetes patients around the world have a new medicine in their fight against this serious chronic disease," said John J. Castellani, president and CEO of PhRMA.
The development of such remedies may present type 2 diabetics with new alternatives with which to manage their illness.
