New contraceptive method may be safer and more effective

There are many different varieties of oral contraceptives on the market. Many women buy Mirena or other products from a Canadian online pharmacy to help them save money on these medications. Recently, scientists from the Oregon Health and Science University unveiled a new method of birth control that may be safe for use among a larger population of women, due to the fact that it is not hormonal like current drugs.
Lead researcher Jon Hennebold explained that the pill, for example, has its downsides because it may affect systems throughout a woman's body due to the hormonal fluctuations that it creates. As a result, this contraceptive strategy is often associated with elevated risks for conditions like cardiovascular disease.
Additionally, users of the pill must conform to a daily schedule, making the drug only about 80 to 90 percent effective.
In contrast, the new contraceptive method focuses on mechanisms that affect egg release, targeting specific enzymes that are responsible for this process.
"Our hope is that the next generation of birth control is more targeted and has a higher effectiveness level," Hennebold said. "Much more work is necessary to further our proposed solution, but we believe that better, safer contraceptive methods are possible."
