The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new drug from Endo Pharmaceuticals that was designed to help men who have low testosterone. The product, called FORTESTA Gel, is now available by prescription. Those who have prostate cancer - and who may buy Flomax to reduce prostate enlargement - should seek their doctor's advice before using it, as the treatment may exacerbate symptoms of the disease.
A clear gel that is available in a small canister, the topical ointment is applied once each day to the front and inner thighs. According to manufacturers, FORTESTA Gel has been introduced at a time when only nine percent of the 14 million men with low testosterone are receiving treatment.
In a 90-day Phase III trial of the drug, researchers found that 78 percent of men who used it had an average testosterone blood level that was within normal range by the end of the study.
Julie McHugh, chief operating officer of Endo Pharmaceuticals, said that the company is confident that "once men try it, FORTESTA Gel will quickly become a significant treatment option for many men with low testosterone."
