Postmenopausal women in particular are advised to seek immediate treatment for this illness, in which the bones thin and weaken. Recently, Tarsa Therapeutics announced the Phase III trial of a new drug for osteoporosis, which has proven to be effective in earlier stages of testing.
Scientists recruited 565 postmenopausal women who had been diagnosed with the bone disorder in six countries. The remedy, called oral recombinant salmon calcitonin, was administered to all of the participants. After one year of treatment, the patients' bone mineral density significantly improved.
"With these positive Phase III top-line results in hand, we are proceeding with the additional dataset analyses we will need to submit a new drug application to the FDA before the end of the year," said David Brand, Tarsa president and CEO. "Our tablet has the potential to offer the 30-year record of safety and efficacy of calcitonin."
The researchers believe that the drug, which would be taken once daily, may not cause the side effects that are associated with some current treatments.
