A study from UCLA's Jonnson Comprehensive Cancer Center recently unveiled a new, highly sensitive test for prostate cancer that can measure numerous components in order to gauge a man's risk for the disease.
"This is a very promising new approach," said lead author Gang Zeng, a professor of urology. "Instead of using just one parameter, prostate specific antigen, to test for prostate cancer, we use multiple parameters that can be measured in a single reaction."
The team published its findings in the Journal of Translational Medicine, which were compiled from a study conducted among 131 patients. The scientists focused on six antigens found in the blood samples of men with prostate cancer, including NY-ESO-1, SSX-2,4, XAGE-lb, AMACR, p90 and LEDGF.
They said that this test has much promise in terms of improving the diagnosis of prostate cancer in order to give patients prompt treatment.
