Recently, a new test was developed by researchers at the University of Edinburgh to identify the specific type of tumor in individuals who have ovarian cancer. The scientists hope that this improved diagnosis will help physicians produce personalized treatment programs and prescribe the most effective drugs.
"This research shows that by conducting a detailed analysis of the genes of ovarian cancers, we may be able to identify those patients who will respond well to new drug treatments," said lead author Charlie Gourley. "This could bring valuable improvements in survival rates for the disease and would help us personalize a patient's care to ensure the greatest possible success.
This condition is the fifth most common cancer in women, and an estimated 6,800 patients are diagnosed each year in the UK.
