New tool can help identify people at risk of experiencing serious blood clots

Hypertensive individuals who buy Plavix may be able to reduce their risk of experiencing a stroke or heart attack. Maintaining cardiovascular health is a priority for many people, and findings from a recent study published in the British Medical Journal could help those who are at risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE). A new risk prediction tool developed by researchers from the University of Nottingham may be able to identify people who need preventive treatment for serious blood clots.
The resource can be easily integrated into a computer system to help assess individuals' likelihood of having VTE before they are admitted to the hospital or begin medications that carry a clotting risk.
Julia Hippisley-Cox and Carol Coupland developed the tool after analyzing data from 563 general practices throughout England and Wales. They studied information from more than 3.5 million individuals between the ages of 25 and 84.
"We have developed and validated a new risk prediction model which identifies patients at high risk of VTE," the scientists stated. "The algorithm is based on simple clinical variables which the patient is likely to know or which are routinely recorded in GP computer systems."
