New treatment may block abnormal bone growth in children and injured military personnel
Bone-related illnesses may affect individuals of any age.
Bone-related illnesses may affect individuals of any age. Diseases such as osteoporosis tend to be more common among older people, who buy Fosamax to alleviate their symptoms, while conditions such as heterotopic ossification (HO) - in which there is an abnormal buildup of bone tissue - has been observed congenitally in children and as a result of injury in wounded soldiers.
A recent study that appears in the journal Nature Medicine revealed that although surgeons can remove the abnormal bone masses, there are currently no effective treatments for this ailment. However, scientists are in the process of developing a drug that may be able to block a signaling pathway in the bone development process.
Such types of treatment "have the biological properties needed to interfere with the specific events that occur in HO," said researcher Maurizio Pacifici. "If these animal results are borne out in humans, we may have very potent and effective treatments for both forms of this disease - injury-induced HO and the congenital form."
The researchers hope to move the remedy into clinical trials soon.
Those who look to Canadian online pharmacies for their drugs, whether they are for bone health or otherwise, may be able to save a significant amount of money.
