Newly discovered genes are associated with type 2 diabetes

While a prescription to buy Canadian Actos can help type 2 diabetics control their blood sugar, scientists are continuing to diversify the number of treatments that are available to different patients. Recently, researchers discovered four new genes and six gene variants that can influence the development of the metabolic disease, as reported by HealthDay.
Because the genes currently connected to diabetes account for only 10 percent of differences between sick and healthy individuals, the team of scientists conducted a search for novel genes that could play a role in the disease. They reviewed 39 multiethnic studies that included more than 17,000 type 2 diabetics and 70,000 healthy controls. The analysis included 50,000 variations of 2,000 genes connected to cardiovascular and metabolic functions.
"As a result of our large-scale genetic analysis, we uncovered previously unknown European and multiethnic genetic variants and confirmed that, together, known genetic risk factors influence [type 2 diabetes] risk in multiethnic populations, including African-Americans, Hispanics and Asians," said researcher Richa Saxena, as quoted by the news source.
The study, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, may help develop better treatment strategies.
Rates of diabetes in the U.S. population are 7.1 percent of non-Hispanic whites, 8.4 percent of Asian Americans, 11.8 percent of Hispanics/Latinos and 12.6 percent of non-Hispanic blacks, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
