Newly discovered genetic variations may be responsible for two mental illnesses
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are both devastating diseases.
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are both devastating diseases. However, patients who buy Zyprexa and other medications, in addition to getting support from professionals, can improve their chances of leading healthy and functional lives. In the fight to improve the well-being of patients, researchers have discovered new genetic variations responsible for these two conditions, potentially opening the door to new therapy.
Scientists at Mount Sinai School of Medicine sequenced the DNA of mentally ill subjects and compared them to the genes of people without the diseases. Between two experiments, the researchers enrolled more than 7,400 patients with bipolar disorder and more than 17,000 schizophrenics. Results revealed 11 areas of the DNA sequence associated with these illnesses, six of which were never previously found. While variations in some of these genes are linked to either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, others were associated with both.
The fact that these conditions seem to run in families had suggested genetic ties.
"Until recently, psychiatric research has understood the genetic basis of mental illness only very poorly," said co-author Shaun Purcell, MD. "Our research has helped us begin to elucidate the genetic structure of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and will, we hope, provide a new foundation to build upon in improving treatments and the quality of life of these patients."
