Arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of Americans and can cause a significant amount of discomfort. In order to improve the quality of life for these individuals, many pharmaceutical companies are working to develop new treatments that may provide superior pain relief.
One of these is Novartis, which recently announced the results of two phase III trials for a treatment called ACZ885. The drug, which is clinically known as canakinumab, successfully alleviated pain and reduced the risk of suffering new attacks in patients who had severe gouty arthritis. Researchers tested the remedy on more than 450 individuals with the condition.
"Patients describe gouty arthritis as agonizingly painful," said lead investigator Naomi Schlesinger. "This new research demonstrates that ACZ885 effectively treated and extended the time to new gouty arthritis attacks, thus reducing new attacks in patients for whom many standard therapies were inadequate or inappropriate."
Gouty arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that currently affects an estimated 8.3 million people in the U.S.
