Obese men with prostate cancer face higher risk of having their disease worsen

Men who buy Flomax to treat any enlargement of the prostate gland should keep an eye on their health, particularly those who are obese. According to researchers at Duke University, males who carry excessive weight may face an elevated risk of having their prostate cancer worsen.
The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association, discussed the link between this disease and obesity, due to the increasing prevalence of both conditions. The American Cancer Society predicts that one in six U.S. men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, while one in three American males are obese.
Researchers evaluated 287 men who had been diagnosed with the disease, had their glands removed and then experienced a cancer recurrence. These patients were given androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in order to inhibit production of testosterone, which can increase prostate tumor progression.
"We think that perhaps obese men may require additional ADT," said researcher Christopher J. Keto. "The dose is the same regardless of weight, while most drugs are dosed according to weight."
