Patients with acute lung injuries may be prone to depressive symptoms

People who are prone to depression may include those who are being treated for other conditions such as cancer or, as suggested by researchers from Johns Hopkins University, acute lung injury (ALI).
The team of scientists conducted a study in which they evaluated 186 ALI patients who were being mechanically ventilated. Subjects underwent scoring with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and instrumental activities of daily living, which characterize depressive symptoms and physical impairments, respectively.
Results showed that after two years, 40 percent of ALI patients who didn't experience depressive symptoms before the experiment did so after their injury. For physical impairment, that figure was 66 percent.
Furthermore, at the last follow-up, depressive symptoms had a strong association with impaired physical function, as published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
"Depressive symptoms are not only persistent in ALI survivors but are a risk factor for subsequent impairment in physical function in ALI survivors," said researcher Dale Needham, MD, PhD. "Given our findings, the early identification and treatment of depressive symptoms should be evaluated as part of the comprehensive rehabilitation of these patients, to determine if such an intervention would improve not only mood states but physical functioning."
