People who get less sun may have higher risk of stroke

While a prescription to buy Canadian Plavix can help prevent a stroke, researchers continue to look for other factors that may influence one's risk of such an event. A study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests that people who tend to get less exposure to sunlight than others may have a higher risk of stroke, as reported by HealthDay.
The team of scientists collected information from about 16,500 individuals who were older than 45 years and had no history of cardiovascular problems. Within five years of beginning the study, about 350 subjects experienced a stroke.
After plotting the information of all test subjects against geographical data on monthly sunlight patterns going back 15 years, the researchers observed that people in the bottom half of the data set in terms of sunlight were 1.6 times more likely to have a stroke when compared to subjects in the top half.
"We still don't know what exactly the sunlight and stroke relationship is due to," said researcher Leslie McClure, whose study will be presented at a meeting of the American Stroke Association.
Independent experts told the news source that the association between sunlight and stroke in this study does not necessarily prove cause-and-effect, and that further research is needed.
Every year, more than 800,000 Americans die from cardiovascular disease and stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
