Phase III clinical trial of avanafil shows promise in treating erectile dysfunction among prostatectomy patients

Patients who are diagnosed with prostate cancer often undergo a surgical procedure called a radical prostatectomy, but this can sometimes result in erectile dysfunction. As a result, pharmaceutical company VIVUS, Inc. recently tested the efficacy of a drug called avanafil to treat this condition in men who have just undergone the operation.
The phase III clinical trial of the drug revealed promising results, showing significant improvement of erectile dysfunction in test subjects.
"Patients who have undergone a radical prostatectomy often have significant erectile dysfunction. Despite advancements in surgery, it can take several months or years to normalize erections," explained John Mulhall, a researcher from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
He added that the positive results of avanafil suggest that the drug may prove to be an attractive treatment option if it is approved.
Mulhall and his colleagues will present detailed results of the study at the upcoming Cancer Survivorship Symposium in Washington, DC.
