People who look forward to celebrating the arrival of the New Year may be interested in finding out how certain over the counter medications and vitamins can alleviate a hangover. Because alcohol is part for the course of such celebrations, doctors from Loyola University Health System are offering consumers advice on how to prevent or treat a hangover.
Before the party begins, it is important to plan on drinking modestly, according to physician Aaron Michelfelder. This means imbibing no more than five and three servings of alcohol for men and women, respectively. Ibuprofen can also be taken to prevent inflammation.
Once the festivities have begun, revelers need to remember to eat first in order to allow the body to absorb alcohol more slowly. In order to prevent dehydration, it is advisable to drink one glass of water after each alcoholic beverage.
Michelfelder also advises taking vitamin B-complex supplements both during and the morning after a celebration. This idea is supported by older studies that suggested that people who took such measures have less discomfort and restlessness, according to Livestrong.com.
People who wake up with a hangover should drink plenty of water and, if possible, get some exercise in order to increase the body's rate of elimination of toxins. Caffeine and further alcohol consumption are not advisable.
According to the National Institutes of Health, acetaminophen should not be used for a hangover because it can cause liver damage when combined with alcohol.
