A team of researchers from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center has found that a drug called Cabozantinib may be a promising remedy for prostate cancer, particularly if the disease has spread to the patient's bones.
Lead author Maha Hussain and his colleagues presented the findings at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. They evaluated a total of 171 men who had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. In about 75 percent of these patients, the disease had spread to the bone.
The team found that nearly 76 percent of tumors shrunk on bone scans in the men who had been treated with Cabozantinib.
"Not only did three-quarters of bone scans have partial or complete resolution, but this was accompanied by improvement in bone pain and decreased need for narcotic use," Hussain explained.
