Rates of diabetes, obesity and heart disease projected to skyrocket by 2020

Chronically high blood sugar can have a negative impact on different systems of the body, including the kidneys, eyes, and heart. New research from Northwestern University predicts that rates of obesity and diabetes will skyrocket by the year 2020.
Based on data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys between 1988 and 2008, the researchers projected that 83 percent of men and 72 percent of women will be overweight or obese (those current figures are 72 and 63 percent, respectively).
Today, 62 percent of men and 43 percent of women are either diabetic or pre-diabetic. By the year 2020, those figures are expected to hit 77 and 53 percent.
"We've been dealing with the obesity trend for the past three decades, but the impact we project on blood sugar is a true shock," said researcher Donald Lloyd-Jones, M.D. "Those are some really scary numbers. When blood sugar goes up like that all of the complications of diabetes come into play."
The American Heart Association has a goal to improve overall heart health in Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020, but the researchers say that according to current trends, that number will probably only reach 6 percent.
This study suggests that more public health interventions that target diet, exercise and smoking are needed.
