Researchers develop new cardiac repair drug to treat heart failure patients
Individuals who buy Lipitor may reduce their risk of having a heart attack and improve their cardiovascular health, which becomes more of a concern as people grow older.
Individuals who buy Lipitor may reduce their risk of having a heart attack and improve their cardiovascular health, which becomes more of a concern as people grow older. Adverse events such as heart failure tend to be more prevalent as one ages, and in order to address this, Juventas Therapeutics has developed a drug called JVS-100.
The treatment recently completed a Phase I clinical trial to determine its safety and effectiveness, and the results will be presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting for the American Society for Gene and Cell Therapy on May 19.
According to scientists, JVS-100 contains a compound called stromal-cell derived factor (SDF-1), which helps mend the heart in patients who have experienced a myocardial infarction. The drug may activate natural stem cell repair pathways, promote the formation of new blood vessels and prevent cell death.
"The preliminary safety and efficacy results from this clinical trial are encouraging," said principal investigator Douglas Losordo. "The clinical responses observed are exciting and warrant further investigation of JVS-100 for the treatment of heart failure in a Phase II clinical trial."
