While a prescription to buy Canadian Plavix is required for patients with a heart stent, about 6 percent of individuals are allergic to this medication, according to medical experts. However, researchers from Thomas Jefferson University found a way to counter these allergies and allow these patients to benefit from the drug regimen.
According to the American Heart Association, a wire mesh stent props an artery open for angioplasty and stays in place permanently in order to improve blood flow and relieve angina. Blood thinners such as Plavix are prescribed for about a year to prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots.
If patients are allergic to Plavix, alternative medications, which have their own side effects, may be prescribed. Drug interruption could put patients at risk for a coronary event or additional surgery with a new stent, the researchers said.
In order to tackle allergies to the drug, the study team experimented with small doses of steroids and antihistamines, administered to 24 stent patients with Plavix allergies. Results showed that 88 percent of subjects successfully took Plavix without any interruptions in their regimen.
Furthermore, the steroids and antihistamines can be discontinued after a short period of time as patients become tolerant of Plavix, the researchers said.
