Recently, researchers from Brigham and Women's University, CVS Caremark and Harvard University reported that people who take care of elderly loved ones often do not stick to their doctors' recommendations for taking medicines.
Many of these individuals report a great deal of stress from having to monitor their own health as well as that of another person.
About 50 percent of caregivers who participated in the survey reported that they were more likely to forgo their own medications than neglect the needs of their loved ones, especially if cost was a problem.
The high price of many prescription drugs in the U.S. has led people to skip doses or even cut pills in half to save money, which can be a dangerous practice as it may release the medication too quickly into the body.
An estimated 65 million individuals in the U.S. identify themselves as caregivers for seniors.
