Smoking cessation can improve memory

Smoking cessation aides and other over-the-counter products are available from Canadian online pharmacies at a fraction of the cost. To quit smoking is to give up a habit that the National Cancer Institute cites as the most preventable cause of cancer. New research suggests that smoking cessation may also improve memory.
Scientists from the Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group at Northumbria University gathered three study groups: smokers, people who never smoked and people who recently quit. Each individual was given a list of tasks to complete at various spots on a university campus. Smokers only remembered to perform 59 percent of their tasks compared to people who never smoked, who succeeded in more than 80 percent of their assignment. People who recently quit remembered 74 percent of their tasks.
"Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the United States, it's important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive function - of which prospective memory is an excellent example," said study author Tom Heffernan. The team now wants to conduct similar studies assessing the effects of secondhand smoke.
