Recently, a study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine explored the potential of cholesterol-lowering medications - such as statins - to reduce the risk of dying from pneumonia.
The paper, which was published in the British Medical Journal, reported that statins may have a protective effect against mortality in individuals with the respiratory condition.
Researchers evaluated data from the Health Improvement Network, comparing information from statin users over the age of 40 to that of non-users.
Patients who had a history of pneumonia were followed over a period of six months. The team found that 13 percent of those who used statins died during the study, compared to 20 percent of non-statin users.
"We believe that a strong case exists for randomized trials of statins in people with serious infection to determine whether a simple and practical intervention at the point of pneumonia diagnosis has a beneficial effect," said lead author Ian Douglas.
