Mayo Clinic researchers from the UK recently reported in a paper published in the journal Nature Medicine that they successfully used a human vaccine to cure prostate tumors in mice without any side effects. This test prompted the animals' immune system to get rid of the cancer without having to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
Lead author Richard Vile and his colleagues observed that this therapeutic strategy appeared to attack only cancerous prostate cells, leaving healthy tissues intact.
"We are hopeful that this will overcome some of the major hurdles which we have seen with immunotherapy cancer research," Vile said.
He explained that previous attempts to administer vaccines against prostate cancer have not been successful, due to researchers' inability to isolate a collection of appropriate antigens in the tumor cells, which then were able to mutate and proliferate in spite of the immune response.
