A recent study conducted by Express Scripts has found that generic and brand-name antidepressants do not have different effects on a patient's medication adherence. According to researchers, this is a promising finding that may ensure positive health outcomes while significantly reducing wasteful healthcare expenses.
Published in the current issue of the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy, the paper reported that depression costs more than $83 billion each year in the U.S. Experts believe that using generic brands of medication can help payers save money without negatively affecting the efficacy of treatment.
In the current study, patients who used generic drugs had a discontinuation rate of 44.2 percent, compared to 46.8 percent among those who took brand-name medications. However, the generic treatments cost almost 50 percent less.
"When patients use medications that cost more without offering a clinical advantage, it causes waste in the system," expert Sharon Frazee explained.
