According to a paper published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, physical activity is another vital part of optimizing well-being. Researchers from the Medical Research Council Unit for Lifelong Health and Aging reported that the benefits of exercise accumulate over a person's lifetime, after studying the association between regular workouts and midlife strength in 2,400 British residents.
Lead author Rachel Cooper and her colleagues collected information on physical activity, grip strength, standing balance and chair rise, which were all used as indicators of physical performance.
"Maintaining physical performance and muscle strength with age is important given that lower levels in older populations are associated with increased risk of subsequent health problems, loss of independence, and shorter survival times," Cooper stated.
